If you think outside the box, you will see that technological advances have provided us with materials and prefabricated parts that can do exactly what we would otherwise have to labo-riously build: robust and, above all, lightweight enclosures for our loudspeakers. Custom lengths can be used to match the characteristics of individual speakers or to influence the frequency response and sound direction.
Not everyone lives in the „hard everyday life“ of stage performances, where the material and fitness required for construction are not spared. But even when you’re playing a small gig with a friend, or transporting instruments and amplifiers to the rehearsal room, you’re happy if you don’t have to carry too much and the material is light.

The „tubes“ of the TOOBs are actually pipes and come in 5 meter lengths. As a landscape architect in a previous life, I used them for example where a small watercourse in a ditch needed to be connected from one side of the path to the other. Simply in the sand bed, with-out any additional concrete construction, these pipes can easily withstand the pressure of heavy farm machinery under a dirt road.
Wenn man mal nicht mehr in gewohnten Formen denkt, kann man feststellen, dass uns der technische Fortschritt Material und Fertigteile bereitstellt, die genau das können, was wir ansonsten mühsam bauen müssen: Robuste und vor allem leichte Gehäuse für unsere Lautsprecher. Mit individuellen Längen kann auf die Charakteristik einzelner Lautsprecher reagiert bzw. die Frequenzkurve und Klangrichtung beeinflusst werden.
Nicht jeder lebt im „harten Alltag“ der Bühnenauftritte, wo das Material und die Kondition zum Aufbau nicht geschont werden. Aber auch beim kleinen Gig mit einem Freund oder beim Transport von Instrumenten und Verstärkern zum Proberaum ist man froh, wenn man nicht zuviel schleppen muß und das Material leicht ist.

Die „Rohre“ der TOOBs sind ursprünglich tatsächlich Rohre und werden in 5-Meter-Stücken geliefert. Als Landschaftsarchitekt in meinem früheren Leben habe ich sie zum Beispiel dort eingesetzt, wo ein kleiner Wasserlauf in einem Graben von einer Seite das Wegs mit der andere Seite verbunden werden musste. Einfach im Sandbett, ohne weiteren Betonbau, halten diese Rohre unter einem Feldweg problemlos den Druck schwere Landmaschinen aus.
